But things don't always turn out as we plan, do they? I had thought ahead and made cookies, decorated, and bought all the food the week before. So the day of the party I was able to leisurely make the dishes, clean, and rearrange furniture. Off to a good start, or so I thought! I had forgotten some goodies in Bf's freezer so he ran back to the suburbs to grab them while I worked away. Big Sis came from NYC to help get ready for the party but because I felt so prepared, that we chatted for a few hours instead.
Then all of a sudden it was thirty minutes before guests were to arrive and I was scrambling to bake dips, arrange crackers, light candles, open wine, and put out desserts. Somehow I managed to do this for the next two hours and missed catching up with friends. Then around ten o'clock I realized I forgot all about the food that Bf ran home to get! I didn't get many pictures because I was so busy in the kitchen and regret only having wine and no food - not the perfect hostess role I had predicted. Luckily I'll have another chance to make this right next year. Bf and I decided to make this an annual affair! All and all it turned out to be a very fun party, Bf and I were so happy to have everyone together.
These are the lessons that I learned this year:
1. Do not have perfectionist visions in your head.
2. Do not spend all your time in the kitchen.
3. Do not use toothpicks in anything when you have a sneaky little dog.
4. Do not listen to your stomach when it tells you that you are not hungry.
5. Do not continue to fill your wine glass between baking food, when you still haven't eaten anything.
The things that need to happen again next year:
1. Invite really fun people.
2. Allow time to catch up with old friends.
3. Create a great playlist.
4. Serve good food.
5. Play a game.
6. Dance.
7. Laugh.
8. Hug.
9. Capture the fun with pictures.
10. End the evening with family.
Happy Holidays to you and yours!
